Being resilient, maintaining your sanity, and having a great holiday season in this chaos!
First off, Happy Holidays, no really! Oh Boy, here we go again, and it is 2021, two years of COVID, shootings, wars, divisiveness, economic hardships, shortages, and now the HOLIDAYS!!! It is enough to make my hair turn grey and fall out… oops too late. Here it is… you cannot change our insane culture, how your family interacts, the expectations of others, at least not in the short term. The only thing that you can address is you and how you perceive it all. The punch line… that is more than enough! Like most everything, the way you think about something affects your experience for good or ill. Don’t you just hate it, I know I do, when someone says just change it, just do it, or my personal favorite, just get over it. This article is not that. I promise you, I would never do that to you, unless I do… Okay, it is work, and you are already overwhelmed, stressed and depressed. Not a great time to do personal work? Or, maybe the very best time? Start with a quiet place, and a couple of deep breaths… Forgive yourself for being in this state, This is very important, you had nothing to do with what this season has become, you are a victim of a broken culture based on a failing model. Feel better already? It is not your fault, nothing you can do will affect the external chaos of the season! Take another breath, repeat that it is not your fault, none of it, not a thing. Own only what is your to own! Now lets see what exactly that is… When you take away the pressure of manufactured expectations, the perfect tree, the perfect gifts (not what your family, friends, etc. need, want , care about) as promoted 24x7 by media, perfect home, snow on the ground (truly something you can do little about, except for that fake stuff, which is horrible in so many ways), the perfect playlist (as if you have not heard enough canned Christmas music since October), the perfect family experience… Hold the phone, this is the big one, and such utter bullshit that the creators of this myth (most having worse family experiences than you) need to be dragged through cactus by wild buffalo. We live in a toxic culture, programmed by people running a playbook that has been in place for thousands of years. We have systematically been having our core bonds broken for the sake of wealth generation. In fact, that is what this whole holiday nonsense is about, and it is only going to get worse. So forgive yourself… Own your experience… Seek the realities that are the base of the season… Embrace them. Did you know that, before Thanksgiving and Christmas were things, the end of the year was a celebration of the return of the light. It was the Yule, the root of Yuletide, and was the darkest time of the agrarian year. This is the time that everyone was inside, working on projects not done during the busier times of year. Families sat around the hearth, telling stories, singing songs, gathering with nearby neighbors (whom depended on each other, and had each others backs) to share food, and celebrate the turning of the year and the returning light! Does that not sound far less stressful, fun and fulfilling. I share this because it is the tradition I embraced years ago to maintain my sanity. That said, I am not suggesting that you abandon your beliefs, traditions and favorite things to follow mine. I am just pointing out that stripping it down to the foundation, and eliminating the generated noise and expectations, might create a space for you to embrace your sanity and maybe the joy of the season? If you can do this, change your way of looking at the season, gain some perspective, reprioritize family and relationship over manufactured expectations, you might even find peace and happiness. If you own it, you might even get your loved ones to join you, and become happier themselves… If you are alone, embrace the return of the light, go out, do simple things, meet people, find free events, tree lightings, caroling, and turn all the lights on! Make a playlist of music you like, music that empowers you, has meaning, brings the light into you! Find the light inside you and celebrate it. Keep it simple, celebrate yourself, embrace relationship, light it up, tomorrow can be better, and join the Kitsap Resiliency Project! If you are not in Kitsap, reach out and we will share the information, start your own Grassroots Resilient Community Movement where you are!!! Shine on, and Happy Holidays!

Sung to the tune of: “What do you do with a drunken sailor”
So you want to change the world? You will need to come together and decide to cure the disease that is causing our culture to slowly kill us. I know that is mind-blowingly overwhelming, hell we cannot even decide what to have for breakfast most days… Can I protest it? No Can I fight it, or for it? No Can I post a meme on social media and believe I am doing something? Yes, but it is not effective. Part of the issue is that we focus on the symptoms of our cancerous culture and not the cancer itself. It is what we are trained to do, focus on the obvious, and not the cause. So, here we are, all together, all colors, sizes, sexes, ages, bleeding from a thousand wounds, all symptoms of a cultural cancer. We all know the symptoms: racism, income inequality, poverty, classism, ageism, sexism, us vs them, divisiveness, all together. We spend time trying to put Band-Aids on each wound, exhausting ourselves, overwhelming ourselves, and becoming unable to even see the blood. All the while the cancer grows, untreated, and we move closer and closer to extinction… Like a cancer, the symptoms are not all so evident as a bleeding wound, even when that is the only visible portion. Like dominos, the symptoms can line up and cause many seemingly unrelated things to happen. And like when a cancer fully metastasizes, the dominos begin to fall in complex patterns, causing more intersecting failures, until the host dies from complicated, but interrelated issues. Is the treatment worse than the disease? Honestly, it is harder, but not worse. What do we need to give up to treat this cultural cancer? Mostly your preconceived understanding of our cultural framework, which means the reality we believe we live in… How quickly can we begin treatment of this disease? We can start now, in fact several efforts are currently working around the world as I write this… unfortunately they are mostly unconnected. How quickly can we treat this disease? Honestly, this is the work of generations, we are planting trees for our children and their children to sit under. That said, if we start working in earnest right now, we can impact the future, or at least create the resilience to overcome some of what is happening, and going to happen. My life is so busy, can I get to this when I have time? How is that working for you so far? So, A**hole, you got our attention, how do we fix this?To begin with we need to gain some perspective, and then we have some unlearning to do, and we need to do this together… Breaking bread is a good place to start!Next, we need to understand that each individual will bring a valuable piece to the puzzle that will create the picture of the future. You don’t know this yet, you need to have faith that when the time is right, you will ask a question, or make a statement, or see something nobody else did. This action will shift the understanding and pieces will fall into place. That is the beauty of the complexity of this, everyone has a piece, and a part to play. I run one of the efforts I mentioned earlier, Resilient Ecosystems, and we are focused on creating a framework to create the grassroots movement necessary to start treating our toxic culture, and build resilient communities at the same time. More about this later. Why are we focused on Community Resilience? You need a goal people can buy into, a goal that will bear fruit far beyond the apparent work you are putting in. It eased people into connecting and getting outside of their comfort zone. It creates capacity, resources, connections, jobs, and the will to drive bipartisan political change, at least as far as creating resilient infrastructure. You know, food, power, water… things we humans rely on to live. What about all this perspective and unlearning stuff? I guess it is time to talk about tipping points. Margaret Mead said to never doubt that a small group of committed people could change the world, in fact it is the only thing that ever has, and it turns out that science has proven that. That is the science of “Tipping Points”, which states that when somewhere between 10–20% of the people are focused and committed to a change, it happens and the other 80–90% follow along. This is how lasting change occurs, it always has been for good or ill. Also using the Margaret Mead theory, this is how we got to where we are, a small group of people were committed to developing a structure where they would be at the top. We currently live in this top down social framework, and playbook that has been in place ever since, about 15,000 years. For more on this I suggest you read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, he has done a masterful job of laying it out. Part of perspective is getting enough distance to see how we got here, and maybe starting to see how we can walk a different path into the future. So, 10–20%? Are those the people getting out of the comfort zone? Nope, those are the people who are showing a portion of the 80% the benefit of doing so. Wait…What? You lost me… What… oh wait, I forgot to talk about the framework! We have developed a framework for change, and I did mention it earlier, the puzzle that you need to bring your piece to. When you put together a jigsaw puzzle, you find the pieces and build the outside first, creating a frame on which to build the rest of the puzzle. Here is the thing, we know some of the parts, at least enough to mostly build the frame. Truth is we are learning as we go, but we have a lot of it, and more every time we work the process. If you think about it, that is how much of the best things in life happen. To build the frame and have any continuity, you need builders, those people who commit to developing the puzzle and doing the personal work necessary to see a bit more of the picture, those people willing to have faith. And yes, those people are the 10-20%. How did you find them? A ton of hard work, presentations, social networking, conversation, and pounding my head against walls. You know persistence, believing in the process…faith in our humanity, what some people may call foolish. I have been working on, and refining this since 2017. It is truly a work in progress, but how could it be anything else. This is a map to a human future, and I cannot possibly know what all of that will look like, but we will figure it out together. I have faith in our humanity, I have faith in our ability to reprogram our culture to support our humanity, and stave off our extinction. On the other hand, I also have faith in the success of our toxic culture and its ability to indoctrinate the majority of us, our school system to dumb us down, and our corporate oligarchy to message divisiveness, and program our expectations. How the heck do you overcome that? Messaging, persistence, education, and time Now for the serious part, the dry portion of this article… Oh no, the how to… Stick with me, there will be more below. We developed a Workshop series to teach, and filter, the 20%: Community Resilience Workshop SeriesThe goal of this series is to create a group of people with the perspective, knowledge, understanding and skills to engage with their communities and begin the process of creating networked, connected, resilient communities in a grassroots way. These are designed to be interactive and will change with the pieces you bring to them. Section One, Perspective· Workshop One: Addressing perspective part one, discussions on assumptions on “human nature” and our understanding of culture. · Workshop Two: Addressing perspective part two, understanding the tools culture uses to manipulate and coopt efforts of change. Words and meanings, why communication is so challenging, and is getting more so. · Workshop Three: Addressing perspective part three, seeing beyond the expected. Section Two, Context on Culture· Workshop Four: Ishmael by Daniel Quinn (prerequisite reading). Exploring the development of Taker Culture, and how the human path was coopted by the Taker path. · Workshop Five: Historical Context, those who do not remember the past are destined to repeat it… ~George Santayana. Looking at human history through a contextual lens of the Taker vs the lens of humanity. What would a human future look like? · Workshop Six: The Siblings, Revolution and Evolution, Insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different outcome… AA. Taking a hard look at how the revolutionary cycles have fallen short of the necessary change, how the cycles start again, and how intentional evolution might change the outcomes. Section Three, Communication and Connections· Workshop Seven: The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz (prerequisite reading). Peeling the onion by exploring the layers of the agreements and exploring how understanding them can help us have deeper connections and overcome the cultural labels that bind us. · Workshop Eight: Meeting people where they are, the art of listening. What we are doing is not new, but it is far outside the norm. Even in normal conversations we tend to think everyone shares our lens of the world and are shocked when there is misunderstanding… We will explore how we do not all see the same thing and how we need to spend time learning where we, and others are, so we can communicate effectively. · Workshop Nine: The Commonalities of our shared humanity. At the core, people want the same things, unfortunately we do not communicate at our core, but at the religious, gender, political, x-label level. An exploration of shared commonalities, priorities, and core connection. Section Four, Laying Foundations and Planting Grass· Workshop Ten: Breaking Bread, the core human connection. Creating core connections in this group. · Workshop Eleven: Tipping Points, the math of human/cultural programming. Understanding the math of tipping points and change. · Workshop Twelve: Train the Trainer, and the core connection! You are the center of this workshop, acknowledge the connections with this group, know that you support each other and are the pieces of each other’s puzzle. You are the foundation! Finding common values, building capacity, making friendsAll of this is designed to build capacity, build relationships, foster grassroots activism, and change minds. It is built on the foundation of finding commonality, that is the goal of the workshops. As with everything else, they are constantly evolving and changing. They are not one size fits all, the leader needs to learn to meet people where they are and deliver the information in many ways while shepherding folks to a common goal. The beauty is that this brings more pieces to the process of building the puzzle. Are you asking yourself what this will cost you? Because it will cost you. You will need to change the way you perceive the world in which you live, and reprioritize your actions accordingly. Our goal is to create a more human cultural framework, we will not live to see the outcome, but we will live to see the beginning, and that is enough. I could take this to the predictable diatribe about inequality, resource usage, greed, etc.… But I really want to talk about psychology, forgiveness, trust, and consequences.
The Short Game That is all there really is, the short game, there is no long game. If there were our situation would look drastically different. The short game is all about gaining, about having, and yes, about winning. It is about security that can never be attained, about broken bonding, about fear, and about entitlement based on detachment from our shared humanity. The scary part is that we (our cultural frameworks messaging) holds this up as success… That is changing and Robin Leach has gone by the wayside with his lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, but the legacy remains. The belief that financial gain will provide the security you need to feel safe is a myth, and one the Myth-busters need to put a stake through once and for all. Alright, no more pop-culture references… Here is the thing, while I am not a psychologist, it seems to me that the “success” behavior in this scenario borders on narcissism? I believe that the most successful think they are the only ones exhibiting this behavior, or that nobody else’s needs matter against their own need. A word about Cognitive Dissonance: Cognitive dissonance is the perception of contradictory information. Relevant items of information include a person’s actions, feelings, ideas, beliefs, values, and things in the environment. Cognitive dissonance is typically experienced as psychological stress when persons participate in an action that goes against one or more of those things.* from Wikipedia More simply, humans can believe that two (or more) mutually exclusive things are equally true, and it completely screws us up. This gives advertising, news media, corporate messaging, religion, politicians, and all the other current and potential manipulators of our lives the tools they need to keep us divided and working against our own best interest. Yes, I am going to use the H word here, against our own HUMANITY! This affects us all, every one of us, that includes you! The work necessary to address this is enormous, and it means that you need to unplug until you can get some perspective. The good news is that once you get some perspective the work gets easier, though it never ends. The whisper is always there, and the message has been refined for centuries, as has the programming we all receive throughout our lives. What does this have to do with Co-opting our future for quarterly profits? It is the means by which it can be done without tar and feathers being involved. Schooling vs Education and Learning Schooling, compulsory education, was developed in the early 20th century through initiatives and investments by the industrial powers of the time, and based on a Prussian model, to create workers with enough knowledge to be useful, and enough indoctrination to be compliant… I know that this comes as a huge surprise to most of you. To get some depth on this subject I recommend reading John Taylor Gatto’s, Underground History of American Education. While schools teach English, Math and History they do so in a way that is very difficult to absorb beyond the very basics. If they did not do this we might use the tools we learned to ask questions, add up the results and see how historically the cycles have repeated. Is this a conspiracy? Yes and no… It was certainly collaborative in the beginning, but what we have now is a culmination of the process, and acceptance of the rightness of it. It is creating a crisis we cannot even see coming and whose effects will, very soon, be felt in every corner of America. We have bought into this system to such a degree, along with the myth of wealth, that we line up to send our children to school, university and higher education, like parts on a conveyor belt, accumulating back breaking debt. Degrees that have been devaluing by the month, into a market that has degraded to the point where the degree gets your kids jobs at minimum wage. So… we have schooling, and degree with no jobs or real skills. Here is the crisis: We have done this at the cost of the “Blue Collar” labor, apprenticeship. skill acquisition, unions, jobs etc. How is this a crisis? Examples: · Wastewater treatment workers are aging out with nobody to replace them · Power linemen are aging out with no replacements · Plumbers are three weeks minimum to answer calls, even critical ones · All of the trades have waiting lists of weeks, even months We send our children to college to have a better future? To have a good paying job? This is the promise we have been told even when the reality is far from this illusion… And the bill is due in so many ways. Maybe it is time to review our belief systems, and ask the questions we were schooled not to ask? Forgive Yourself! That is all, Forgive Yourself! You had no control over the process, but you have a choice now. You can spend your cycles beating yourself up, feeling guilty, feeling remorse or, you can begin to change the future, starting with yourself. Which is a more useful path to take? Trust Trusting is hard, until you embrace your humanity right about now, if you are absorbing this article, you are feeling defensive, antagonized, angry, depressed, or some dark feeling not easily identified. I would ask you to embrace trust! Yes, a lot of what I have said is depressing, but you will never move forward from that starting point. Forgive yourself for what you had no control over, and trust that if you do the work, starting now, you will end up in a better place. A healthier place, with good relationships, community, and empowerment. Are you asking what I am selling? I would be asking that right now… I am selling you on the idea that there are other, better, more human paths into the future… If you want to support this work, as well as doing it yourself, there will be a Patreon link at the end, and at some point in 2022, a book if you would like to read more about this. Right now, I want you to make some choices, but before I get to that I want to discuss some outcomes, consequences if you will: Staying this course, the one we are currently on: We live on a single planet with fixed resources… think about that. Capitalism, requires and ever expanding consumer base to exist and grow. Think about that along with the fixed resources… Climate Change is real and accelerating Our focus on industrialization and profiting on all things humans require to survive is slowly, or not so slowly, destroying the foundations on which we live. Soil erosion will continue to increase until we cannot grow food. Monoculture will continue to degrade nutritional values. Water will continue to be polluted and treatment will continue to lag due to lack of innovation and investment until we are drinking diluted poison. Systems will fail in cascading fashion, as these dominos fall. Continuing homelessness and financial collapse. If we cannot afford it now… This is by no means a complete list, but it is enough to provide the end result… human extinction. Choosing a Humancentric PathThis is where I talk about the framework of change looking like a jigsaw puzzle that has the edges done but needs you to bring your piece of this puzzle, remember the mention of empowerment above. Your piece is needed to determine what the picture will become. Here are some of the elements: Innovation Learning (real learning) A humancentric foundation Community Security A FUTURE!!! Starting this article, I am conflicted on which direction I should go? I have two separate and compelling ideas for this heading: one is a challenge to imagine a government without politics… the other is an exploration of the degradation of the process of imagination in America, and the need of it to create a human future.
What to do? Hmmmm, why can’t I start with one and lead into the other…. Let’s give it a try… Imagination is more important that knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. — Albert Einstein The ability to imagine might be humanities single most important survival trait, yet it is the one thing our cultural framework actively seeks to educate out of us… I do not want to spend this time defending this premise. It would be a rabbit hole that we could spend hours going down and never get to the positive points that need making. I will leave it at this: without imagination all of the science, technology, engineering, and math are tools left on the table. It is far too simple to say “bring arts back into the mix”, another tool to be left on the table, without changing our thinking around developing the ability to imagine. I said earlier “America”, but this is a global issue that has been going on for thousands of years. America just codified it with our Prussian approach to compulsory education. John Taylor Gatto, The Underground History of American Education. I do not think that education is “bad”, though our approach to it is horrible on almost every level. We ignore the science of human development to achieve goals set by industrialists from the past century. Those goals were to develop compliant workers with enough education to provide a foundation for industrial growth. It succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectation. It became a system of its own, and has also corrupted the higher education of the wealthy industrialists that had planned a master class. Yes, the people we think of as the leaders of industry are just as incapable of imagining as the rest of us, If they were able to use imagination, they would see that the end result of this path is destruction, and that it is rushing up on us like a freight train. If they were able to imagine, we might even have flying cars by now… I recommend watching Fritz Lang's, Metropolis from 1927, or the redone (musical score) version by Giorgio Moroder in (appropriately) 1984. To truly grasp the depth of how our culture developed so far from our humanity you need to be willing to challenge what you think of as the norm, and see things in a different way. A good starting point is reading Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. This book is required reading for the workshop series provided by Resilient Ecosystems. There is a war being waged in which we all are losing, losing our humanity, our lives, and our ability to live on this planet. Time is running out for us if we do not learn out to reengage our imaginations and embrace our humanity. It is not going to happen without conscious effort and the pain of change. The question you must ask, while looking into your eyes in the mirror is: What am I willing to do to save my children? Yes, it is our children, not some vague future generation, that will face this extinction level crisis. I know… you can’t imagine it… So… that is part one, the degradation of human imagination, and why we don’t have flying cars yet! I want one!!! Can you Imagine? Imagine a row of dominos falling, the pattern is complex, and chaos ensues where they fall. This is a great example of the cascading affect of the coming disasters. We are “programmed” to think that a switch will flip at some future point and that crisis will happen then. Crisis is happening now, and we need to change our thinking NOW! Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ~George Santayana Continuing the subject broached above, out thinking is influenced by corporate owned media, politically and corporate driven divisiveness, and propaganda. This falls on fertile ground plowed by our education system and a cultural framework formed, not by our humanity, but by the need for a few to control the many. Think of our cultural framework as an organic computer, it is programmed by thousands of inputs per second by all of us. If we have been manipulated to input programming to support the “taker” model for thousands of years…we get a taker based cultural framework. The problem is that we need a humanity based framework, and to get this we need to become aware of the taker input, and rewrite it. Guess what, we need imagination to accomplish this… Here is your first imaginary task: Imagine what a democratic government might look like without a political element? There is no single right answer, other than to get by the initial kneejerk response. I will leave this here, because anything else I might add will influence your process. Good luck and grand imagining! My two cents I have had millions of conversations in my life with people of all backgrounds and around this small world on which we live. The one lesson I can pass on is that you need to listen for intent far more than content.
This excerpt from a post I wrote about one of Miguel Ruiz’s Four Agreements will lay a foundation for this discussion: “Everyone sees the world through layers and filters built from their families, their teachers, their life experiences. Everything they see, they see through their life filters. Understanding this is the starting point to understanding that everyone you see is a reflection of your experiences, and has nothing to do with them, or very little…” This is true of you as well, and this is why “Intent” is the most important thing to understand when communicating! All of us experience this effect, this filtering through our life filters. I can get all psychological here, but the best way to communicate is to keep things simple and relatable, and that is my intent… see what I did there. Building relationships based on open communication is the strongest foundation you can have. We are literal landmines of cultural influence, easily triggered by false impressions of others intent, and things that do not look like we “expect” them to. We have decades of cultural input setting unrealistic expectations, all designed to sell us on the “perfect” relationship, lifestyle, employer, etc. What we find is disappointment and frustration despite our best efforts. It is a wonder we get together at all, and no surprise that we are so easily led into the us or them rhetoric used to divide us. It is a wonder… and it is all too much. We cannot control what others perceive, or say, or do. We can only control ourselves, and our intent. This starts by understanding our intent and being honest with ourselves. This is an unfortunately challenging task, made harder by the constant input in our lives. You must find a way to create a space for yourself where you can cut the “noise” and see more clearly. Without getting too spiritual, or psycho-babble here, I will share my tool for finding this space. First I call the “noise” my monkey voices, chittering around my head making it hard to hear myself think. When I need to get away and find the peace to “be me” for lack of a better description, this is what I do: I visualize a corridor in my mind, where I walk to the back of my brain. At the corridors, end is an old deco elevator that I take down to my sanctum, my man cave so to speak… There it is quiet and I can really look at what is real and what is noise that affects my thoughts and actions. There I can remember that it is both about me, because, well I am me, and not about me. Here I can look at what is real and what is a reflection of my filters. Is this perfect, no, but it is a darn sight better than letting the noise churn and delude me into believing that what is spewed by the noise is real. This exercise allows me to set my intent and measure the intent of others more accurately. This place lets me keep the fear pumped by the noise 24x7, down so that I can make better choices. This practice allows me the possibility of building stronger relationships based on honesty. This creates the space so that I can know my intent, and measure other's intent more clearly. If it were easy anyone could do it… Wait… anyone can do it, in fact we, as humans, are wired to connect, to have community. Look around, does real community even exist? Does what your church offers equated to real community? Have you ever found real community at community centers? Of course not, they are illusions created to create the appearance of filling a need that is core to us, without actually creating the space for relationships to build. I want to thank a young lady named Deanna, who reminded me that relationships need space and time to build. They also need clear intent and honesty. The truth is that creating community and building relationships is hard when the cultural framework we live in is delivering noise that tells us not to trust, to stay divided, to look for romance, by hammering the messaging and creating confusion. The cultural framework intent is clear, divided we are easier to control, together we are unstoppable. The cultural framework, as I think of it, is an organic program designed to prevent change, and maintain the status quo. It does this even when we are heading toward extinction… Before we can fix this problem, we need to fix ourselves, we need to learn to think, and connect, and be human again. Only then can we begin to reprogram the Cultural Framework to reflect our humanity. This is my intent, not revolution, not extinction, but intentional evolution, one step at a time, a journey toward our humanity. One relationship at a time, one neighborhood, one community. We do not plant a shade tree so that we can sit under it, we plant it so that our children, and their children can. I would love company on this journey, together we can plant seeds and create a more human space on this world…one step at a time. Something to think on… |
